Packing Tips from the Pros

By Stella Woods Travel Tips

Some travelers jam two weeks’ worth of gear in their bags for a long weekend. Others pack a bit too lightly and forget important things like medicine or passports. Savvy travelers strike the perfect balance and bring just what they need, with a little help from our list of road-tested packing tips.

• Roll the clothes instead of folding them. It’s faster and will maximize your space.
• If you think rolling is not good for you, then stack the clothes. Take two or more garments, for example trousers, and lay half of one pair on top of the other. Fold the one on the bottom over the pair on the top. Then take the other and fold it on the top.
• Keep dirty shoes from mucking things up by placing them in shoe bags or shower caps, which are available at most hotels.
• You’re more likely to re-wear a pair of bottoms, then a top. So to avoid over-packing, pack two different tops for every bottom.
• Particularly when you’re dealing with rolling luggage, you have to consider how your items will respond to motion. One important rule of thumb is to keep all the heavy items stored towards the wheels so weight is distributed evenly.
• Another way to avoid wrinkles as well as prevent stains is to pack your light colored clothes inside out. That way if there is any debris, your whites and pastels are safe.

Tips for Air Travellers

• Do not lock your checked bags except with TSA-approved locks; otherwise, if your bag is selected for random screening, agents will have to break the lock to get inside.
• Do not over-pack your bag. Screeners will have a difficult time closing your luggage if selected for inspection, which will only lead to wrinkles and the potential for lost articles.
• Be aware of restrictions on the size and number of bags you may bring onto your flight.

Go casual, simple, and very light. Remember, in your travels you’ll meet two kinds of tourists. Those who pack light and those who wish they had.
